Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
